WPA reader

In preparation for our inaugural bike tour, I’ve uploaded several of the more remarkable documents I’ve come across in my research on federally supported art and the WPA in Oregon.

backtowork
Download the Portland Art Museum’s WPA brochure Back to Work: Oregon and the New Deal Art Projects.

federal-support-for-the-vis-arts-1

Download Francis O’Connor’s recommendations from Federal Support for the Visual Arts: The New Deal & Now (1969).

oregon-almanac-1

Download a selection from An Oregon Almanac: A Handbook of Fact and Fancy (1940), a pamphlet produced by The Oregon Writer’s Project.

oregon-oddities-1

Download a copy of Oregon Oddities (1939), a newsletter on historic bells, also produced by The Oregon Writer’s Project.

There is also a great essay David A. Horowitz wrote for the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission on Martina Gangle, a Portland-based WPA artist and activist. Read it here.
